Songkran April 2014

Songkran - 2014

These school holidays have seen us travelling to the island paradise of Phuket, mainly to participate in the Thai New Year Festival - Songkran.
Songkran is held on the 13th April every year and it is symbolised by the throwing of water to wash away evil spirits.  Talcum powder is also smeared on strangers' faces as a symbol of good luck.

In Phuket, however, the celebrations began a day early, with a walk back from Jungceylon like a military mission to make sure nothing that shouldn't get wet did get wet, knowing we would end up drenched by the time we arrived back at our hotel – and sure enough, we did!!

Bangla Road - the night before Songkran

This is how Col Colin Ahearn saw the festival despite a constant face-full of water:

So today Tracy AhearnKash Ahearn and ole me, spent the day having the biggest water fight on the planet. I spent around 7 to 8 hrs just saturating my fellow man.

We left the hotel and headed to Bangla Rd to see how crazy it was down there, last night was more serious. We then walked down the Patong Beach Road and it was game on down there all the way. Utes full of yobs with water having a huge amount of fun.

Both Trace and Kash just smiled and laughed all day as the worlds biggest water fight took place.
We got back to our hotel, The Viridian to find the island Gods had provided a hose and a couple of massive buckets.
I got sunburnt like a crisp but had the best time. All in all I spent about 8 hrs wetting people and Kash did a 6 to 7 hour water fight. Yes I said it prior but Soo much fun.

It was GAME ON. Kash and I proceeded to hit people with massive amounts of water over and over again. Soo much fun.

A number of Chang beers later in the day surely helped as we continued to pelt people with copious amounts of water.
After hours and hours I walked away feeling my work here was done.
Yet another total food immersion with another feed of Thai food for tea.
If I had to describe it I would say come with a fun attitude, carry everything in water proof pouches and just have a ball.

PUT SONGKRAN ON YOUR BUCKET LIST,
soo worth the trip.
